a legend and a fixture

edita sherman steals the show

There’s a charming documentary out right now that follows the story of famed photographer Bill Cunningham. A quirky and interesting character in his own right, there is a moment in the documentary in which he visits his former Carnegie Hall Artists Colony neighbor Edita Sherman that truly steals the show. The grandiose and hysterical 96 year old is every bit as spectacular as her moniker “the Duchess of Carnegie Hall”. To be honest I didn’t really know who she was until I fell for her charm on screen. Among the things I’ve learned about her since, I love that she has lived in that same artist colony since the 1940’s, has spent decades fighting the city of NYC from demolishing her home – successfully,  and has been leaving care packages of homemade soup at the doorsteps of her famous neighbors (think Warhol and Mark Twain) all these years. Such a phenomenal woman. Enjoy!
