all give. no take.

warby parker gives vision a whole new meaning

As the holiday season fast approaches I thought I would take the opportunity to highlight one great company for every day this week that is not only offering beautiful and stylish gift options for your loved ones, but also has commendable commitments to the betterment of our community. Some of these businesses you may have heard of, and hopefully a few will be well deserved new additions to your shopping destinations. At a time of year when everyone and everything seems to be obsessed with consumerism – we think the most stylish gift of all is one that keeps on giving after all the presents have been unwrapped. Without further ado …

Warby Parker is a company that I originally had no idea had a heart of gold. A coworker of mine turned me on to them because of their incredibly stylish men’s and women’s vintage inspired frames and sunnies that retail for an astonishingly low $95.00. The optical frames even come with your prescription lens at the $95.00 price point. Forget discount online retailers, these frames are genuinely stylish and rival options I’ve bought for 4 or 5 times that ammount from designers like Persol and Oliver Peoples.

Not a fan of buying such a personal item online? Not to worry. WP offers both a virtual try on (where you upload your picture and see how various frames look on your face), as well as the option to receive up to 5 pairs for five days – commitment free – to try on at home. Simply send them back with your selection and prescription and they mail back your pick for $95.00 total. Pretty amazing.

Now for the really great part. Without any social aspect, this company is already a terrific service and stylish retailer, but they also are partnered with Vision Spring, a non-profit that trains people in 3rd world countries to start eyewear businesses that sell affordable eye glasses in their community. For every pair you buy, a pair designed specifically for the demographic they are going to is given. It is a perfect blend of charity and empowerment that cleverly avoids the tendency of dependence that plagues international aid. Learn more about their Vision Spring efforts HERE.
