It was only a matter of time before this ultra lush man about town image came back into the fashion lexicon. In the 1970’s the turtleneck was a catch all option for men. Men would rock it with jeans and loafers for a jet set Mr. Howell feel, or throw is on under a suit (sometimes of the leisure variety) for a night out of cocktails and tail chasing. What was once reserved for emotional painters and gay men, the turtleneck enjoyed mass popularity in the 70’s, only to be banished to the land of mockable goofy things our parents used to wear(see Andy Samburg above ;). Short of Steve Jobs – few people have been seen publicly wearing a turtleneck with a straight face for many a year. Well… as the fashion story goes – what’s old is new again – and it’s time for you to channel your inner Paul Newman. Go on – it’ll be fun.
Look at this guy – super cool. THIS is how you make a turtleneck look cool. The key? Confidence. Go with comfy knits and brushed cottons and don’t be afraid to sport the ultra thin almost t-shirt like options out there – like our friend Paul is rocking above. A turtleneck works alone or as a layer to any look. I give this trend about a year before it starts to run back into obscurity – so act fast and get your turtle time while you can.
